High Point Gutter replaced the gutters on a two-story Puyallup home in September 2026. The September 11 assessment found rotted rafter tails, no proper drip edge under the shingles, and upper downspouts emptying onto the roof below. On September 23 the crew sistered eight rafter tails, cut back two gable ends, added drip edge and about 50 feet of counter flashing, and hung 114 feet of new 5-inch K-style gutter.

What High Point found
The estimator walked the house on September 11. The quote written that day lists three problems behind and around the old gutters. Some rafter tails, the ends of the roof framing that the gutter fastens to, were rotted out. The house did not have proper starter metal under the roofing at the edge. And some of the upper-level downspouts ended directly on the roof below.

The quote also listed two gable ends to be cut back flush with the rafter tails.
Why the quote went beyond the gutter
A new gutter is only as secure as the wood it is screwed into. Where a rafter tail was rotted, the quote called for a sister tail: a new piece of lumber fastened alongside the old tail to give the gutter a solid attachment point. Eight were priced.
The quote added 1×3-inch drip edge under the roofing so water coming off the shingles drops into the gutter instead of wicking behind it, plus counter flashing tucked behind the drip edge to close the gap between the roofline and the top of the gutter. The two gable ends were quoted to be cut flush with the rafter tails, so the new gutter could extend to the end of each roof line and catch all of the water.
For the upper downspouts, the quote proposed hardpipes. A hardpipe extends a downspout along the roof surface and drops the water into the lower gutter, so the flow is not landing in one spot on the shingles.
How the job was completed
The install ran on September 23. The old gutters and downspouts came off and went for recycling, the rotted tails were sistered, and the gable ends were trimmed back. The new gutter was formed on site from .032-gauge aluminum in Low Gloss White and hung on hidden hangers, with 2×3 downspouts and one custom offset to keep a downspout tight to the wall.

The completion note records two changes from the quote. The garage had a new roof that already had drip edge, so the crew skipped 23 feet of starter metal there. And one of the two hardpipes was deleted, because the downspout it served came from a small gutter in the middle of the front. One black hardpipe was installed. The crew installed about 50 feet of counter flashing.

The finished result
By the end of September 23 the house had new white gutters and downspouts, hung on repaired rafter tails, with edge metal under the shingles on the house.

Gutter replacement cost in Puyallup, WA
This project fell in the $4,600 to $7,600 range. The gutter and downspouts were the largest share. Drip edge was the next biggest line, followed by the counter flashing and the eight sister tails. A house with sound rafter tails and existing drip edge would have skipped much of that. This range reflects the scope of this completed project and is not a current quote.
What homeowners with similar homes should know
Rotted rafter tails are hidden behind the old gutter until someone looks. If they are part of the problem, ask whether the quote repairs them before the new gutter goes on.
Check what is under the shingles at the roof edge. On this house the main roof lacked proper drip edge, while the newer garage roof did, so the quote and the final scope were adjusted to match.
Look at where your upper downspouts end. On this house, one ended on a lower roof and got a hardpipe.
Related questions
How much does gutter replacement cost in Puyallup, WA?
This Puyallup replacement fell in the $4,600 to $7,600 range for 114 feet of 5-inch gutter, 106 feet of downspout, eight sister tails, two gable-end cuts, drip edge, about 50 feet of counter flashing, and one hardpipe.
What is a sister tail?
It is a new piece of lumber fastened alongside a rotted rafter tail. On this house it gave the new gutter a solid place to attach where the old tail had rotted out.
Why was drip edge left off the garage?
The garage had a new roof that already had drip edge. The crew skipped those 23 feet and installed drip edge on the house, which did not have proper starter metal.
Why was only one hardpipe installed when two were quoted?
One of the quoted hardpipes was for a downspout coming off a small gutter in the middle of the front. The crew deleted it on install day and installed the other.
How long did the installation take?
One day on site, September 23, 2026, twelve days after the September 11 assessment.
