K-Style Gutters, Formed Seamless for Your Home

★★★★ New white seamless gutters and downspout on a home addition in Seattle, WA

Look up at almost any house in the Puget Sound area built in the last fifty years and you are looking at a K-style gutter. It is the profile most homes here get, and for good reason: it carries a lot of water, it hangs tight to the fascia, and it looks like part of the trim. High Point Gutter forms K-style gutters (you will also see it written K style) on site for homes across Snohomish County, King County, and the greater Seattle area.

Here is what makes K-style the default, how to pick a size and color, and how we hang it. For everything else that goes into a new system, including removal, downspouts, and fascia work, see our gutter installation and replacement services.

What Is a K-Style Gutter?

A K-style gutter has a flat back that sits against the fascia board and a shaped front face that looks like crown molding. Look at one from the end and the outline has the angles of a letter K, which is where the name comes from.

That decorative front is why K-style blends into a house instead of looking bolted on. From the street it reads as a finished trim line along the roof edge.

It is also a working shape. Its broad base and straight back leave more room inside than a rounded gutter of the same width, so more water fits in the trough before anything spills over.

Why K-Style Is the Default in the Pacific Northwest

Capacity. K-style holds more water than half round of the same width. Through a long wet season, that extra volume is the difference between a gutter that keeps up and one that overflows at the corners.

Covers Fit It. Our gutter covers are made for this profile. Pair K-style with DoublePro microfiltration covers and you have the High Point Gutter System, the setup most of our customers choose.

Value. Seamless aluminum K-style is the value standard. Our ballpark for seamless aluminum gutter and downspouts, installed, is $10 to $20 per linear foot.

It Suits Most Homes. Ramblers, split-levels, newer builds, and most remodels all look right with K-style. The main exception is an older, traditional house, which is where our half round page comes in.

5-Inch or 6-Inch K-Style?

We form K-style in two sizes. For a typical single-story house with an average pitch, 5-inch is usually plenty. Bigger roof planes, steep pitches, and long valleys that funnel water to one corner usually need 6-inch.

Paired with larger 3x4 downspouts, a 6-inch system moves about 40 percent more water than the 5-inch version. Your estimator measures the roof and makes the call on the visit.

Our post on 5-inch vs. 6-inch gutters walks through the math, including the roof features that push a home to the bigger size.

Seamless K-Style, Formed On Site

Every K-style run we install is seamless. We bring a coil of heavy-gauge aluminum and a forming machine to your driveway and roll each gutter to the length of its wall, so a long run goes up as one piece. Learn more on our seamless gutters page.

The only seams left are where the gutter turns a corner or drops into a downspout. That matters more with K-style than you might think, because its squared inside corners are where water finds a failing seam first.

Colors and Materials

The aluminum coil we form K-style from comes in a broad palette of baked-enamel finishes, and your estimator brings color samples to hold up against your trim and siding. The finish is baked on at the factory, so it does not need painting.

Aluminum is the most popular material for its balance of cost and durability. Steel and galvalume are stronger for heavy conditions, and copper K-style is an option when the budget allows. See every option on our gutter styles and colors page.

Fascia Mounting and Hidden Hangers

Because the back of a K-style gutter is flat, it mounts straight to the fascia board. We hang it on hidden hangers that sit inside the trough and screw into solid wood every two feet or so, so nothing shows on the front face and the gutter holds its shape under a load of wet needles or snow.

Each run is pitched toward its downspout so water drains out instead of sitting. If the fascia behind the old gutters has gone soft, we replace those boards first, because a hanger is only as strong as the wood it goes into.

No fascia board at all? Some homes are built without one. For those we install fascia gutters, a profile that doubles as the trim board. And if your house calls for a traditional look, compare half round gutters.

Frequently Asked Questions About K-Style Gutters

Viewed from the end, the gutter profile has the angles of a capital letter K: a flat back and a shaped front. The name stuck, and K-style and K style both refer to the same gutter.
For most homes, yes. K-style holds more water than half round of the same width and works with gutter covers. Half round is the better choice on older and traditional homes where the rounded look matters. Our half round gutters page covers when that is the case.
Yes. We install T-Rex Gutter Covers and Double Pro Gutter Covers from Alu-Rex on K-style gutters, often on the same visit as the new gutters. When you add Alu-Rex covers, your installation warranty extends to a lifetime guarantee. See our gutter guards and covers.
Our ballpark for seamless aluminum gutter and downspouts, installed, is $10 to $20 per linear foot. Corners, 6-inch sizing, fascia repairs, and roof height move the number. Our post on gutter installation cost breaks it down, and we give you an exact number after measuring on a free visit.
Not directly, since K-style mounts to the fascia. Homes built without one get fascia gutters instead, which serve as both the gutter and the trim board.
