Behind the old gutter, the fascia board had rotted, and the roof edge had no drip edge metal to keep water from wicking behind the gutter. The crew removed 27 feet of gutter, rotten fascia, and old fascia wrap, then rebuilt the edge from the wood out: new primed cedar fascia, drip edge, steel fascia wrap, and a new 5-inch K-style gutter tied back into the four existing downspouts.

The homeowner’s problem

The homeowners requested a new gutter assessment at the end of July. The gutter along one side of the house was packed with debris, and the trim behind it was visibly deteriorating. The house sits near a row of tall conifers, and the gutter run in question was carrying a full load of needles and leaf litter.

What High Point found

At the assessment on July 31, our estimator found two problems layered on top of each other. The fascia board behind the gutter was rotten. And the roof edge had no starter metal, the strip of drip edge that normally sits under the first course of shingles and directs water out over the gutter. Without it, water running off the roof can wick back along the underside of the shingles and onto the wood behind the gutter.

The old gutter had also been mounted with the gable ends of the roof extending past the gutter line. That meant the gutter stopped short of the end of the roof, and water off the last stretch of roof missed the gutter entirely.

Why the fascia was failing

The scope High Point wrote for this job ties the rot to the missing drip edge: the home did not have the proper starter metal under the roof, so water was getting behind the gutter and onto the fascia. A gutter that is packed full makes that worse, because water overtops the back edge instead of flowing to the downspout. Fix the gutter alone and the wood behind it keeps taking water. Fix the wood alone and the same water path rots the new board.

The repair we recommended and why

High Point recommended rebuilding the whole roof edge along the 27-foot run rather than patching the gutter. The gutter repair scope came in five layers, from the wood out:

New fascia board. The rotten fascia came off and was replaced with 27 feet of 1×6 primed cedar. Painting was left to the homeowner.

Drip edge metal. The crew installed 27 feet of 1×3-inch drip edge under the roof edge to direct runoff out over the gutter instead of behind it. This is the piece that was missing.

Steel fascia wrap. 30 feet of custom-bent 24-gauge steel wrap, color-matched in white, went over the new fascia in the gutter zone. The wrap seals the wood from moisture so the new board is not sitting exposed behind the gutter the way the old one was.

Gable ends trimmed. Eight gable ends were cut flush with the rafter tails so the new gutter could run all the way to the end of the roofline and catch the water that had been missing the old gutter.

New gutter. 27 feet of 5-inch K-style gutter, plus 6 feet of counter flashing where a gap remained between the roof edge and the top of the gutter. The four existing downspouts were in good enough shape to keep, so they were reconnected to the new run rather than replaced.

How the project was completed

The work was done August 20, 2026. One complication showed up once the old material came down: the vinyl soffit along the run kept coming apart as the fascia was removed, and the crew rebuilt it piece by piece as they went. The crew lead noted a couple of small paint lines on the reassembled soffit and walked the homeowner through why the panels were seated correctly.

Project cost range

This project fell in the $2,000 to $3,300 range. That covered 27 feet of new gutter, fascia board replacement, drip edge, steel fascia wrap, counter flashing, trimming eight gable ends, reconnecting four downspouts, and removal of the old gutter, fascia, and wrap.

The gutter itself was a small part of the cost. Most of the price was the carpentry and metal work behind it: fascia board, drip edge, wrap, and the gable trimming. A repair where the wood is sound and only the gutter needs work would land well below this. This range reflects the scope of this completed project and is not a current quote.

What homeowners with similar homes should know

If your gutters are sagging or your trim is peeling or soft behind them, ask the estimator to check for drip edge before quoting a gutter swap. Not every roof edge has it, and a new gutter over the same missing metal puts the new fascia on the same path to rot.

Debris makes everything worse. A gutter packed full of needles overflows at the back edge, straight onto the fascia. Regular gutter cleaning is the cheapest way to keep a sound fascia sound.

Where a gable end extends past the rafter tails, the gutter cannot reach the end of the roof, and water off that last stretch misses it. Trimming eight gable ends flush let the new gutter run the full length of the roofline.

Is steel fascia wrap worth it?

On this home the previous fascia rotted behind the gutter. The 24-gauge steel wrap seals the new cedar from moisture in the gutter zone and removes the need to repaint that stretch of trim. The scope called for 30 feet of wrap over the 27-foot run.
