High Point Gutter installed 141 linear feet of 5-inch DoublePro gutter covers on a single-story Everett home as part of a full replacement of the gutters underneath: 141 feet of new 5-inch K-style aluminum, 93 feet of downspouts, two hand-mitered corners, and 35 feet of counter flashing. The job began as a request to assess the home for covers on September 3, 2026, and finished September 18. Two carpentry items set it apart from a standard cover install. Four rafter tails were extended with sister tails to close a gap behind the gutter, and one gable end was trimmed so the gutter could run to the end of the roofline.

The situation
The request that opened this job was titled “Assess to Install Covers,” and the assessment was September 3. The house is a single-story home with a roof carrying several skylights. Tall firs stand along the back fence line. The assessment photos show fir needles and cones collected along the roof edge above the existing gutter, which is the debris load the homeowners wanted covers to deal with.
What High Point found
The estimator’s note to the crew records the finding that changed the scope: “Some of the rafters are cut too short, so there is an inch to two inches on a few of them between the gutter and the rafter.” A gutter hanger needs solid wood behind it. Where the rafter tail stops short of the back of the gutter, the hanger has nothing to bite into at that spot.
The fix written into the quote was four sister tails: a new piece of rafter tail fastened alongside each short one to bring the wood out to the back of the gutter. The estimator also called for one gable end to be trimmed flush with the rafter tails so the new gutter could extend all the way to the end of the roofline and catch the water coming off that edge.
Why the gutters were replaced along with the covers
DoublePro is not a screen that sits on top of an existing gutter. It is a continuous hanger with the cover built in, so it replaces both the hanger and the cover in one piece and is installed as the gutter is hung. On this home the covers were the single largest line on the quote, slightly more than the gutter itself. The homeowners were paying for cover protection first and getting new .032 gauge aluminum gutter and fresh hangers as part of the same system.
Getting the water to the ground
Ninety-three feet of 2×3-inch downspouts came off the new gutter. Five of them terminate into underground drain lines, so each got a black 2×3-to-4-inch flex pipe transition where the downspout meets the 4-inch drain. Without the transition there is a size mismatch at grade where water can back up or spill.
Thirty-five feet of counter flashing closed the light gap between the roofline and the top of the gutter along the runs where the shingle edge did not reach the trough.
How the project was completed
Work ran September 17 and 18. The crew removed and recycled all 141 feet of the old gutter, added the four sister tails, and trimmed the gable end. The new 5-inch K-style was formed on site in continuous lengths and hung with the DoublePro hanger and cover as one assembly. The two corners were hand-mitered on site and sealed. Downspouts, flex transitions, and counter flashing followed.
The homeowners added a roof blow-off and a moss treatment to the same visit. The crew cleared the loose needles from the roof surfaces, then applied a white powdered zinc sulfate monohydrate along the ridge. Per the product description, the white residue is normal and rain carries it down the roof over the following weeks.

This project fell in the $5,000 to $8,300 range. On a covers project, the cover footage and the gutter footage each scale with the house, so they set the baseline together. Downspout runs and drainage tie-ins add to it. The carpentry on this job was small in dollars but it is the kind of item that only shows up once someone is on a ladder looking at how the gutter meets the wood. This range reflects the scope of this completed project and is not a current quote.
What homeowners with similar homes should know
If you are pricing gutter covers, have the rafter tails and the gutter attachment checked at the same visit. On this home the estimator found short rafter tails during the covers assessment, and the fix went into the same quote instead of becoming a surprise on install day.
Know which downspouts go underground. Each one that ties into a drain line needs a transition fitting, and it is easier to count them at the assessment than to discover them when the old downspouts come off.
If your roof carries needles, the blow-off and cover install belong in the same visit. On this job the roof was cleared in the same visit, so the new system started without a needle load waiting above it.
